The Lal Qila or Red Fort, as it is popularly known stands at the end of the Netaji Subhash Marg in Chandini Chowk. Amongst the hustle-bustle of Old Delhi, Red Fort is visible from a distance because of its stark red demeanour. Built by Shah Jahan in 1639, the fort was Shah Jahan’s palace in his capital Shahjahanabad equivalent to modern Chandini Chowk. The monument is significant because of its grandeur, historical past, unique Indo-Islamic architecture and modern function. Every 15th August the Prime Minister hoists our National Flag at Red Fort to celebrate the independence of India, thus increasing its political importance manifold.
